Canada’s National Men’s Team is back on the ice at the 2023 IIHF World Championship on Saturday after a two-day break, facing off against perfect Switzerland with first place in Group B on the line.
Last Game
Canada rode a four-goal first period to a win on Wednesday as it defeated Kazakhstan 5-1 to stay unbeaten in prelim action. Joe Veleno and Sammy Blais finished with a goal and two assists each, Lawson Crouse scored a pair of goals in first period and Joel Hofer stopped 17 shots to earn the win in his first start of the tournament.
Like Canada, Switzerland is coming of its fourth win in as many tries in Riga, a 4-2 win against Slovakia on Thursday that kept it alone atop the group. Four different Swiss found the back of the net, with Nino Niederreiter, Christian Marti, Gaetan Haas and Jonas Siegenthaler scoring goals.
Last Meeting
The teams last met in the prelims a year ago, with Canada falling 6-3 in Helsinki. Drake Batherson finished with a goal and an assist, while Adam Lowry and Kent Johnson also found the back of the net for Canada, which held a 3-2 lead late in the first period before the Swiss netted the game’s last four goals.
What to Watch
Following a three-point game versus Kazakhstan, Veleno leads all Canadian forwards with five points (2-3—5). The 23-year-old is making his first world championship appearance, playing between fellow Quebecois Sammy Blais and veteran Milan Lucic to make up Canada’s most consistent line this tournament. Coming off his second NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings, Veleno is no stranger to wearing the Maple Leaf, having suited up for Canada at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Hlinka Gretzky Cup (twice), IIHF U18 World Championship and IIHF World Junior Championship (twice).
To say the Swiss goaltenders have been unbeatable is almost not hyperbole. Through four games, Leonardo Genoni and Robert Mayer have combined for three shutouts, allowing only two goals – both against the Slovaks – on a tournament-low 57 shots. Genoni will be familiar with the Canadians; the 35-year-old is playing in his ninth world championship, and appeared in 10 Spengler Cups during his time with HC Davos.
A Look Back
The Swiss have caused trouble for the Canadians in recent years, with the teams splitting the last 10 games since 2010 and Canada dropping three of the last five.
Before the 2022 matchup, Canada and the Swiss needed overtime to decide their quarterfinal meeting at the 2019 IIHF World Championship. Mark Stone was the extra-time hero, finishing with three points (2-1—3) while Pierre-Luc Dubois collected two helpers to lead Canada to a 3-2 win .
All-time record: Canada leads 26-5-2(4-2 in OT/SO)
Canada goals: 167
Switzerland goals: 51
